KARACHI: The Sindh government has appointed Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwan as Local Government Secretary while incumbent Roshan Ali Sheikh was removed from his post following his arrest by National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Sindh Services and General Administration Department issued a notification that Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Ali Shallwani has been appointed as Sindh Local Government Secretary replacing Roshan Ali Sheikh. According to another notification, Sohail Rajput has been named new Karachi Commissioner.

NAB arrested Roshan Ali Sheikh in an illegal land allotment case after Sindh High Court (SHC) rejected his bail plea. During the hearing, presiding judge Justice Muhammad Karim Khan Agha remarked that LG secretary and nine others had misused their powers as government employees.

The judge refused to further conduct proceedings on the bail petitions filed by the accused and directed the authorities to arrest the LG secretary. Following the orders, a five-member team of NAB arrived at the court and detained Roshan Sheikh, who avoided the arrest for several hours by not coming out of the courtroom.

The SHC also granted bail to Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leader Saif Abbas, Shoaib Memon and former Local Government Secretary Shaukat Jokhio and ordered their immediate release.

Roshan Sheikh and others are accused of allotting 265-acres of land illegally to a small cottage industry in Landhi. According to the anti-graft bureau, Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Board of Revenue officials were also responsible for the scam.
