In compliance with court orders, the Commissioner of Karachi has revoked the license of the legally established Korangi Road cattle market, prompting strong opposition from traders.
The market administration has announced its intention to challenge the decision in the Sindh High Court, appealing to the Chief Justice for intervention.
According to Market Administrator Sardar Sohail, the license was lawfully acquired through an official auction conducted by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), with a bid payment of Rs7 million. The license was issued on May 9 after approval from KMC, the Deputy Commissioner of Korangi, police, and other relevant departments.
Spread across ten acres, the market currently accommodates over 250 traders and farmers, with approximately 4,000 animals available for sale. It has developed into a temporary settlement, featuring food vendors, parking areas, and digital banking services. Traders from Punjab and other parts of Sindh have also joined local sellers, making the market a vital source of income for many families.
Meanwhile, the commissioner’s office has authorized 14 cattle markets across Karachi for this Eidul Azha season. However, citizens visiting these markets have raised concerns about the sharply rising prices of sacrificial animals.
