Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Secretary General Ameerul Azeem has passed away after a prolonged illness.
A spokesperson for Jamaat-e-Islami confirmed his death, saying that he had been suffering from cancer for a long time.
According to the party, his funeral prayers will be offered at 5:00 p.m. on Friday at Mansoorah in Lahore.
Born in Lahore in 1958, Ameerul Azeem earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of the Punjab.
During his student years, he was elected president of the Punjab University Students’ Union and later served as Nazim-e-Aala (chief) of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba.
During General Zia-ul-Haq’s rule, Ameerul Azeem led a long march demanding the restoration of student unions and was imprisoned for his activism.
He also served for many years as the central secretary for information of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan. In 2019, then-party chief Sirajul Haq appointed him as the party’s secretary general on the recommendation of the Central Majlis-e-Shura, a position he was reappointed to in 2024 by the current chief, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, following consultation with the party’s highest consultative body.
