Former Pakistan cricket coach Jason Gillespie has accused interim head coach Aaqib Javed of undermining him during his tenure, labeling Javed a “clown.”
Gillespie, who was appointed Pakistan’s Test coach in April last year on a two-year contract, resigned less than eight months into his role following a string of disappointing results. His resignation came just before a series in South Africa.
This marked the second time in two months that a foreign coach departed from Pakistan’s cricket program. In October, South African Gary Kirsten also stepped down as the limited-overs coach.
Earlier this week, Aaqib Javed, who serves as both the interim head coach and a national selector, admitted that frequent changes in team management had negatively impacted Pakistan’s performance. This comment followed Pakistan’s failure to progress beyond the group stage of the Champions Trophy, where they suffered defeats against New Zealand and India.
In response, Gillespie took to Instagram late Wednesday, calling Javed’s assessment “hilarious.” He accused Javed of working behind the scenes to undermine both himself and Kirsten in a bid to secure the coaching position for all formats. “He is a clown,” Gillespie stated in his post.
Aaqib, a former Pakistani international cricketer, initially stepped in as interim coach for the limited-overs teams after Kirsten’s departure. He later took over the Test squad following Gillespie’s exit.
