Chairman of Jamiat Ahle Hadees Pakistan, Maulana Sajid Mir, passed away on Saturday in Lahore. He was 87 and had been ill for some time.
According to family sources, his health was poor following a backbone operation, and he was also suffering from heart disease. The deceased was a great religious, academic, and political figure who dedicated his entire life to the service of Islam.
Professor Sajid Mir was born on 2 October 1938 in a religious Kashmiri family in Sialkot, Punjab, Pakistan. He was the relative of Muhammad Ibrahim Mir Sialkoti. Sajid Mir earned a Master’s in English literature from the University of the Punjab in 1960, followed by a Master’s in Islamic studies from the same university in 1969.
Sajid Mir was elected to the Senate of Pakistan in March 2009 on a reserved seat for technocrats and ulema as a PML-N candidate. He was the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Science and Technology. He was also a member of Senate committees of Rules of Procedures and Privileges, Functional Committee on Government Assurances, Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development.
In March 2018, he became the Ameer of Jamiat Ahle Hadith.
