Photo-sharing platform Instagram has begun rolling out a new feature from June 18 that allows users to add separate captions to each slide in a carousel post.
With this update, the caption displayed beneath a post will automatically change as users swipe through photos or videos, providing specific context for each piece of content.
Instagram’s parent company, Meta, described the addition as a “long-requested feature,” noting that users, content creators, and brands have been waiting years for this functionality.
Earlier, carousel posts could only include a single caption that appeared beneath the entire post regardless of which slide was being viewed. Users who wanted to provide individual explanations for specific images or videos had to write lengthy captions covering all slides or embed text directly into the images themselves.

These workarounds were often ineffective for tutorials, travel highlights, product showcases, event recaps, and visual storytelling posts, where the content changed with each swipe but the accompanying caption remained the same.
The new feature is designed to be simple and user-friendly. While creating a carousel post, users will now see an option in the caption section allowing them to choose between “Single Caption” and “Multiple Captions.”
The “Single Caption” option will remain the default setting, ensuring that users who prefer the traditional format can continue using it without any changes.
By selecting “Multiple Captions,” users can add unique captions to each slide during the posting process. Once published, viewers will see the caption update instantly as they swipe through different images or videos, making it easier to understand the context and story behind each slide.
