NEW DELHI: India’s coronavirus case tally topped 6 million after it reported 82,170 new infections in the last 24 hours, data from the health ministry showed on Monday.
Deaths from COVID-19 rose by 1,039 in the last 24 hours to 95,542, the ministry said, which is 1.6% of total cases. The number of recoveries had surged to 5.01 million with 74,893 million people recuperating from the disease.
The death toll from the pathogen climbed to 95,542 with 1,032 more deaths. There are 962,640 active cases of the coronavirus disease in the country, comprising of 15.85 percent of the total cases.
The total coronavirus cases mounted to 6,074,702 while 5,016,520 have recovered from the virus, taking the recovery rate to 82.58 percent. The case fatality rate has declined to 1.57 percent, it said.
Globally, India has the second-highest number of coronavirus cases, behind the United States where infections crossed 7 million last week.
With the majority of Covid-19 cases reported in the month of September, Mumbai, the largest city in India, is likely to cross 0.2 million COVID-19 cases on Monday.
Over 50, 000 cases were reported in September so far, the highest number of cases recorded in a month. The city crossed the 0.1 million mark on 18th July. However, the spike in daily cases has continued since August with over 2,000 cases a day reported regularly.
So far, there have been 198,846 COVID-19 cases reported in Mumbai, including the 2,261 cases reported on Sunday. The Covid-19 positivity rate is 18.15 percent. Of the total, 162,000 patients have recovered and been discharged.
