Indian pharmacist dies after drinking botched COVID-19 cure

NEW DELHI (AFP): An Indian pharmacist died and his boss was left hospitalised after both the persons consumed corrosive chemicals they had prepared as “cure” for coronavirus.
According to the police, “Both the employee and the owner consumed the mixture and developed health problems, however, the owner’s condition is stable now.”
“They seem to have had a belief that the mixture may be used for COVID-19 treatment and to improve platelet count in the body,” the police official said.
Both the persons worked for a herbal medicine company and were testing their treatment for coronavirus. The police officials informed that the treatment was a mixture of nitric oxide and sodium nitrate.
The second person – who survived the treatment – said that Sivanesan bought the chemicals from a market and developed the formula after conducting research on the internet.
So far, there are no approved medicines or vaccines for treating COVID-19. The world scientists are in a global race for a new drug for the disease that has killed more than 278,000 people worldwide.
The country of 1.3 billion imposed a drastic nationwide lockdown in an effort to halt the spread of the disease. The lockdown, which was announced at the end of March, is set to run until May 17.
India has seen record spikes in coronavirus cases this week. So far, coronavirus has affected almost 61,356 across Indian and has claimed lives of more than 2,000 people.
