Indian forces have committed innumerable ceasefire violations across the Line of Control targeting innocent civilians and villages. But the deliberate targeting of UN peace observers is certainly a ‘new look’ in their conduct and nefarious designs.
Indian forces opened fire at a vehicle carrying two officers of the UNMOGIP across the LoC. Luckily they were unhurt but the vehicle was damaged. The white SUV is signature vehicle with UN markings and can be easily recognised even from distance. Their presence cannot be considered a provocation and he UN would have to conduct an inquiry into the matter for targeting peacekeepers.
The Pakistan Army, who rescued the UN officers, has called the incident illegal and unlawful and against all established norms which show ill intentions of the Indian forces. India has denied access to the UN mission in the restive region across the border and is targeting peacekeepers fulfilling their duties by visiting the victims of these ceasefire violations
This is certainly as clear violation of international law and humanitarian norms and must be condemned. India has committed nearly 3,000 ceasefire violations this year targeting civilians including women and children. These people are the biggest victims of the border dispute and the struggle between the nuclear-armed nations.
This comes as Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi addressed a presser in Abu Dhabi to warn the world that India was preparing for a surgical strike against Pakistan. The foreign minister has mentioned this earlier but exposing India on UAE soil has amplified the message in the international media. The world needs to be aware of India’s nefarious designs.
Last month, Pakistan shared an intelligence dossier with the international community contained irrefutable evidence of Indian sponsorship terrorism and armed groups. The global community should take action to protect their vested interest but should tcaution India to refrain and desist and certainly not test Pakistan’s resolve.
The Pakistan Army is well-prepared to teach a befitting reply to India provocations but it is also the responsibility of the UN and international community to de-escalate the tensions before it leads to catastrophic consequences. The UN peacekeeping mission should fulfill its mandate ensuring the strict observance of the ceasefire agreements and protect the lives of innocent civilians.
