Gaddani fishermen were left stunned and amazed as they witnessed a colossal whale just off the coast on Monday, Aaj News reported.
According to locals, this marks the first recorded instance of such a massive marine creature being sighted alive in Balochistan’s waters. The whale, classified as endangered by international agencies, has brought a rare spectacle to the region’s maritime landscape.
Although several deceased whales have washed ashore on Balochistan’s beaches in the past, the sighting of a live specimen is unprecedented. Local fishermen estimated the whale’s length to be potentially up to 100 feet and its width around 50 feet, with a weight reaching as much as 150 tons.
This remarkable sighting has sparked hope within the fishing community, indicating a thriving ecosystem in Balochistan’s waters. Historically, whales were heavily hunted for their meat and oil, nearly driving them to extinction, particularly in the Indian Ocean. However, recent research from 2021 suggests a potential resurgence of whale populations in the region, with evidence of their return and possible breeding activities.
Video footage captured these magnificent mammals in waters near the Seychelles, fueling optimism for the ocean’s ecological balance and the potential revitalization of whale populations. The Seychelles, located just over 3,000 kilometers directly south of Karachi and Gaddani, serves as a crucial point of reference in understanding the migratory patterns and habitat preferences of these awe-inspiring creatures.
