In Pakistan to build a house is an act that people belonging to middle and lower-middle-income families desire to fulfill in their whole lives. However, for most people, it is a hope not just towards comfortable accommodation, but towards permanency, substantial proof of social security and feeling grounded. And for most of these people, it is a dream that goes unrealized or they end up spending a lifetime of savings on it.
According to a report, Homelessness is a huge issue for Pakistanis. Out of a population of 220 million, less or more than 20 million people lack adequate housing and live in slums areas of the country.
As a young populace comes into its years of maturity, building a house is becoming much more indefinable. This fact has been one of the causes behind PM Imran Khan making the Naya Pakistan Housing Program one of his flagship initiatives in government.
Since 1967, the famous slogans of Roti, Kapra Aur Makan (cloth, bread, and house) came into existence in Pakistan but these slogans could not be put into practice. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan has made the age-old slogans and dreams a reality by distributing houses among the working class under the Naya Pakistan Housing Program.
Naya Pakistan Housing Program
Naya Pakistan Housing Scheme is an ambitious housing project set in motion by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The main goal of the Naya Pakistan Housing Scheme is to construct 5 million houses for the people belonging to a more humble socio-economic class.
The seeds of this scheme were sown back in 2018 on the first visit of Prime Minister Imran Khan to China. While the plan to make tens of millions of homes has been called ambitious the entry of a Chinese-owned prefabricated homes company Easy Prefabricated Homes (Private) Limited proofed a major step towards realizing this goal.
The simple to environmentally friendly, assemble and quality homes could be exactly what Pakistan’s homelessness endemic might require. With an over 60-year warranty and the sort of 2-3 acres units that were required for the Naya Pakistan Housing, the scheme could be entirely prepared in a short passage of time. It was a dream situation, and for the prime minister, a way to confirm his critics wrong.
Distribution of 1,500 houses and flats
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed the pledges to uplift the weak and underprivileged sections of the society in a ceremony to distribute 1,500 houses and flats to laborers.
Addressing a ceremony in connection with the allotment of houses and flats to the working-class under the Naya Pakistan Housing Programme, he said it is very hard for the salaried class, workers and laborers to build or purchase a house in the metropolis due to the high prices of land.
The Prime Minister said the government started Naya Pakistan Housing Program with a new aim to provide support to these sectors of the society to own a house. He mentioned that the government has introduced legislation under which the banks will provide loans at a five percent interest rate for the construction of houses. PM Imran said the banks have promised to set aside Rs380 billion for this purpose.
