Knowing whether a couple is happy in their marriage is actually very easy. You don’t have to work hard, just look at their faces and see if they smile together or not.
According to a study published in the Journal of Emotion and Psychopathology, the strength and happiness of a relationship does not depend only on communicating with each other or shared values, but smiling also plays an important role in it.
Experts say that when couples subconsciously smile together, it is a sign that they are satisfied with their relationship. Happy couples are often seen smiling at the same time, while unhappy couples have less of this tendency.
The study included 61 married couples, of which 30 were happy with their relationship, while 31 were seeking help from experts to improve their relationship.
Experts analyzed their facial expressions with advanced facial recognition software and observed how often they smiled and how quickly the smiles appeared on their faces.
The results showed that couples who were happy with each other smiled at the same time. Moreover, when one of them smiled, the other’s face also smiled in just 0.62 seconds.
Experts say that this is a natural process that is not under the control of couples, but rather it shows the depth and strength of their relationship. Often couples are unaware of this behavior because it happens on an unconscious level, but it is a sign of a happy relationship.
