A sharp rise in street crime has gripped Karachi, with nearly 100 people losing their lives in snatching incidents this year, sources reported on Thursday.
According to data from the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), over 15,000 mobile phones and 35,000 motorcycles have been stolen from citizens in the first nine months of 2024 alone. Additionally, around 1,200 vehicles were either stolen or snatched across the city.
The overall crime statistics paint a grim picture, with 471 people reportedly killed in various incidents throughout the city.
In a particularly tragic case, a young man was fatally shot last night in Surjani Town while resisting a robbery. The man and his brother were attacked by armed assailants while returning home after collecting their salaries. When they refused to give up their motorcycle, the attackers opened fire, killing one brother and seriously injuring the other.
This violent trend has also seen more than 800 people injured while resisting robberies. Moreover, seven police officers have lost their lives in the line of duty while trying to combat the city’s growing crime wave.
