For the first time in Pakistan’s history, female volleyball players will represent a foreign club.
The Pakistan women’s volleyball team’s captain, Azra Farooq, and vice-captain, Muqadas Bukhari, have signed up for the Women’s Volleyball League and will compete in the MZC Ladies Cup starting on July 25.
Azra Farooq and Muqadas Bukhari have been signed by Al Fawz, a Maldivian team, for this event. Their contracts are valid for one month.
Azra Farooq noted that the Pakistan women’s volleyball team is experiencing a historic moment, as this is the first time players have been included in an international competition held outside of their own nation.
Meanwhile, the federal government this week offered all possible assistance to the Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) for holding the first ever pro-league in September-October.
Nadeem Irshad Kayani, Secretary of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC), stated: “Volleyball is the only sport that has brought honors to the nation.” It’s no small feat to defeat a formidable Iran team in the final and win the Central Asian title. The nation has also been proud of their seniors. We would do all in our power to support them in building a robust domestic foundation so they could have a competitive squad for the 2028 Olympics.
The secretary disclosed that the installation of an air conditioning system at the Liaquat Gymnasium in Islamabad has been approved for Rs 200 million.
