Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a major expansion of the provincial government’s e-bike scheme, with plans to provide 100,000 electric bikes annually to students across Punjab through affordable, interest-free monthly instalments.

The initiative aims to make transportation more accessible for students, particularly female students, while encouraging the use of environmentally friendly vehicles and reducing dependence on petrol-powered transport.

Under the expanded scheme, eligible students will be able to purchase modern electric bikes by paying a monthly instalment of Rs2,100, with the Punjab government offering a subsidy of Rs70,000 on each bike to significantly reduce its overall cost.

Students will be required to pay an initial down payment of Rs14,000, after which they can continue with affordable monthly instalments.

However, in a move aimed at supporting female education and mobility, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that the Punjab government will cover both the down payment and registration fee for eligible female students. As a result, female beneficiaries will only need to pay the monthly instalments without making any upfront payment.

The scheme has also been extended to Punjab government employees, who will now be eligible to obtain electric bikes through the same easy instalment plan.

Eligibility criteria

Students wishing to benefit from the programme must fulfil the following conditions:

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

They must be enrolled as regular students at any Higher Education Commission (HEC)-recognised degree college or university in Punjab.

Applicants must possess a valid motorcycle learner’s permit or a full driving licence.

If applications exceed the available quota, beneficiaries will be selected through a transparent electronic balloting process, according to the provincial government.
