Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is in Saudi Arabia on his first official visit since assuming office in an attempt to reaffirm bilateral ties after Imran Khan’s ouster and seek economic assistance. The premier along with his delegation arrived at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
An untoward incident happened as a group of unruly Pakistani citizens accosted, heckled and raised disrespectful slogans against the prime minister and his entourage at the Prophet’s Mosque (PBUH) in Madinah. As the prime minister and his delegation arrived at the mosque, the protestors raised ‘thief’ slogans and continued to film the entire episode on mobile phones.
The protestors also misbehaved with federal minister Shahzain Bugti and pulled his hair, while also hurling expletives at Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb. The visibly perturbed delegation was escorted away by Saudi guards. The incident has drawn condemnation from political and religious leaders as well as the public for violating the sanctity of the holy site and raising indecent slogans.
Pakistan has requested Saudi Arabia to take action against those involved in the unruly incident. It is unclear if Saudi Arabia has taken prompt action but some Pakistanis have been arrested and an investigation has been launched. If action is taken, they risk hefty fines, jail and would certainly be deported from the Kingdom.
The incident must be strongly condemned in all forms. The Prophet’s Mosque (PBUH) is the second holiest site in Islam. It is the duty of every Muslim to maintain the sanctity of the mosque and not even raise your voice. The uncivil behaviour and sloganeering is despicable and will harm the image of Pakistanis across the world.
The incident has also raised criticism with reports that the miscreants were PTI supporters. The party should also condemn the incident and distance themselves. Any political disagreement should be held within a civil, democratic manner rather than such behaviour. Political leaders need to shun the practice of spreading hatred and creating divisions in society.
