KARACHI: The Sindh government will provide free solar systems to 275,000 families in low-income and remote areas to ensure access to affordable, reliable and environmentally friendly electricity, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media, the Senior Minister said the project, worth Rs 18.2 billion, is being executed on the instructions of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, with the aim of providing tangible relief to poor and deserving families in the energy sector.
He said work on the project is progressing at a rapid pace. Under the initiative, solar systems will be distributed among 132,000 families in off-grid areas and 143,000 families in on-grid areas across the province.
Memon said each deserving family will receive a complete solar kit comprising a 180-watt solar panel, battery, fan and LED lights to meet their basic electricity requirements.
He added that more than 15,000 solar kits have already been distributed, while the government has set a target to complete the distribution to all 275,000 families by June 2027.
Sharjeel Memon said the project goes beyond mere provision of electricity and represents a significant step towards facilitating low-income households by providing them with a sustainable and cost-effective energy solution, thereby improving their quality of life.
