ISLAMABAD: The federal government is reported to have once again extended an invitation to the opposition for dialogue, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sending a message to Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai for a meeting, sources confirmed on Monday.
Media reports quoted sources as saying that the Prime Minister invited Achakzai to meet either at the Prime Minister’s Office or the Prime Minister’s House. The development comes at a time when reports of growing contacts between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) over the proposed 28th and 29th constitutional amendments have been circulating.
Sources said Achakzai declined to meet at the Prime Minister’s Office or House, instead suggesting a neutral venue. Initially, the opposition leader expressed willingness to hold the meeting at the residence of Federal Minister Rana Sanaullah.
Messaging between the government and opposition reportedly took place last week, with discussions expected to focus on the prevailing political situation as well as the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and members of the Election Commission.
The government’s renewed outreach underscores its attempt to ease political tensions, though the opposition’s insistence on a neutral venue highlights the mistrust that continues to shape the dialogue process.
