KARACHI: In a welcome development for the people, the wholesale price of flour in Karachi has decreased by Rs16 per kilogram.
Currently, flour is retailing at Rs106 per kilogram in Karachi’s wholesale market, following a reduction in the price of wheat to Rs87 per kilogram within the city.
Meanwhile, a 50kg sack of flour is available for purchase at Rs5,300 in Jodia Bazaar.
Despite the price drop, the Karachi commissioner has yet to issue an updated price list, even though the commissioner had previously set the price of flour at Rs123 per kilogram for Ramadan.
On March 23, a vendor in Karachi’s Jodia Bazaar, the nation’s oldest and largest wholesale market for essential commodities, faced penalties for selling flour at a price lower than the official rate.
The Karachi Wholesaler Grocers Group (KWGG) expressed discontent over the fines levied on the vendor, threatening to organize a strike in protest against what they deemed as injustice.
A team from the Deputy Commissioner’s office conducted an inspection of the market on Saturday, scrutinizing prices and the sale of food items at various shops in Jodia Bazaar. During the inspection, it was discovered that one retailer was selling flour at a lower price.
