KARACHI: Sindh celebrates a monumental achievement in cultural preservation and historical stewardship with the inauguration of its first-ever cutting-edge ‘Scientific Conservation Laboratory’. Positioned strategically adjacent to Romi Graveyard on the Northern Bypass, this facility signifies a pivotal moment in the region’s commitment to safeguarding its vibrant cultural legacy.
The rapid establishment of the laboratory, completed within an impressive seven-month timeframe under the interim government’s tenure, underscores the unwavering dedication of authorities to cultural conservation. Dr. Syed Junaid Ali Shah, the interim Sindh minister for culture, sports, labor, and human resources, played a central role in driving this pioneering initiative forward.
Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and amenities crucial for the meticulous preservation of artifacts, the laboratory is staffed by a proficient team of archaeologists, draftsmen, architects, field officers, technicians, and other specialists. This ensures comprehensive care and protection for the region’s historical treasures.
The development of this infrastructure signifies a substantial investment in Sindh’s cultural landscape, with a notable emphasis on utilizing local resources. With the laboratory now operational, Sindh has the capability to conduct both paper and antiquities conservation locally, thereby streamlining the process and ensuring timely maintenance of its invaluable historical artifacts.
The rigorous artifact conservation procedures implemented at the laboratory reflect a steadfast commitment to scientific principles and best practices. Field officer Amir Memon, involved in conserving artifacts spanning over 2,300 years, underscores the significance of each object and emphasizes the necessity for meticulous preservation efforts.
The laboratory serves as a focal point for international collaboration, welcoming archaeologists from countries like Germany, Italy, and France who contribute invaluable insights and expertise. This exchange of knowledge not only enriches conservation endeavors but also fosters global cooperation in safeguarding cultural treasures for future generations.
