HANGU: An attack on a police team en route to polio vaccination duty near Chhapri Wazir left one jawan martyred and four policemen injured on Monday, authorities said. One of the wounded policeman who was in critical condition, succumbed to his injuries.
According to initial reports, assailants opened fire on the police personnel as they were traveling to carry out polio immunization activities. An encounter between security forces and the attackers is ongoing at the scene.
A heavy police contingent has been deployed to the area to contain the situation and pursue the suspects. All of the four injured policemen were evacuated from the site and transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment where one of them lost his life.
Local authorities have cordoned off the area around Chhapri Wazir while an investigation and clearance operation continue. Further details, including a motive for the attack and the identities of those involved, have not yet been released.
