SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook has unveiled its plans to connect the next one billion people to the internet with its new infrastructure and connectivity tools installation.
With fast and affordable internet service, Facebook disclosed that since 2013 the company has managed to connect 500 million people worldwide. With the installation of new technologies, it will allow another one people to access high-quality internet.
However, during the announcement Vice President of Facebook Dan Rabinovitij said, “We have seen that economies flourish when there is widely accessible internet for individuals and businesses.”
“We are sharing the latest developments of some of these connectivity technologies, which aim to deliver major improvements in internet capacity across the world by sea, land, and air,” he added.

Meanwhile, with the introduction of ‘Bombyx’ a new technology connectivity tool which can install fiber-lines within the fraction of time, is lighter, faster and fully autonomous system. It allows installations for terrestrial fiber cables on land without the expense of trenching to install fiber underground.
One of the engineering team members at Facebook said that with this technology we can enter almost any territory. He further mentioned, “In most of the world, medium-voltage power lines pass down almost every street. If we could find a way to add fiber to those power lines, we would have a solution that could be applied globally.”
Moreover, a single fiber of Bombyx can serve up to 1,000 homes, and the time taken to cross a power line from 17 minutes has been compressed to about 4 minutes. This technology has reduced the amount of cost spend and also the human interference.
Along with new connectivity technologies, Facebook also announced to install Terragraph, a wireless technology solution which is capable of delivering networking through the air especially, in areas that are thought to be hard to penetrate with overhead or underground fiber cables. To date, more than 30,000 Terragraph units have been shipped worldwide to service providers.
Facebook furthermore unveiled the plans to install ‘2Africa cable’, which would extend over 45,000 kilometers with the addition of nine landings collectively dubbed the 2Africa Pearls. The subsea cable will directly connect three continents — Africa, Europe and Asia.
While making the announcement of above mentioned plans of the world’s top social media platform Facebook, it said that they aim to reach high-speed and reliable internet to more than 300 million people with an immersive experience of new virtual spaces which are easy to access and highly affordable.
