ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers are likely to get another jolt as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) is set to accept CPPA’s request for an increase of Rs 5 per unit in the basic tariff.
Preparations are underway to impose an additional burden of more than 310 billion rupees on electricity consumers.
Nepra will decide on the request of the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), which is seeking an increase in the basic tariff for the financial year 2024-25.
The CPPA has proposed seven scenarios for power purchase prices, with an estimated range of Rs 25.03 to Rs 27.11 per unit.
After the approval, the power purchase price burden is expected to reach Rs 3.58 trillion, which will put additional pressure on power consumers.
Yesterday, it was reported that electricity consumers may face a significant tariff hike of Rs 3.49 per unit due to fuel charges adjustment for April 2024.
On behalf of the power distribution companies, the Central Power Purchasing Agency has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority for an increase in the price of electricity by Rs 3.49 per unit.
Following this application, Nepra has scheduled a public hearing on 30 May 2024. If approved, the adjustment will appear on customers’ June bills.
It is worth mentioning here that the revolving debt of Pakistan’s power sector has increased to Rs 2635 billion by January 2024.
According to the report released by the Power Division, the increase in circulating debt continued despite the huge increase in electricity rates and fuel adjustments.
An increase of Rs 2310 billion was recorded in circulating loans till June 2023, which shows an increase of Rs 325 billion during the seven months (January 24).
