Karachi: The consumers of K-Electric may soon, see a cut off in the electricity rates, as the power utility has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking a decrease of Rs. 5.02 per unit under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for March 2025.
NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on the application for May 22, after which a final decision will be announced.
The proposed adjustment is part of K-Electric’s monthly fuel cost review mechanism, which depicts the alteration in the fuel prices and generation costs.
In the recent months, the consumers have faced fluctuating adjustments. In the case of February’s FCA, K-Electric was allowed a relief of Rs3.64 per unit, although it had requested Rs. 6.62 per unit. Despite the approved relief, NEPRA withheld Rs. 3 billion from the adjustment.
Last month, however, K-Electric users were denied a Rs. 2.98 per unit relief in the FCA category, raising questions among consumer rights advocates about transparency and fairness in tariff adjustments.
If NEPRA approves K-Electric’s latest request, the estimated relief for consumers could total Rs. 6.66 billion, potentially lowering electricity bills for millions of users in Karachi.
