RAWALPINDI: The head of Awami Muslim League (AML) Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has said that the decision by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to postpone elections for Punjab Assembly, originally scheduled for April 30 and rescheduled for October 8, 2023, has created constitutional crisis in the country.

His comments came a day after the ECP released an 8-page order on Wednesday, saying it could not hold the elections honestly, justly and fairly in a peaceful manner due to security threats and in the absence of funds, being unable to provide ‘level playing field’ to all political parties.
The term ‘level playing field’ was also used by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah while addressing joint session of Parliament yesterday (Wednesday) when he said “Elections of all assemblies should be held in the presence of the caretaker set-up. Polls on the same day will be a level playing field for everyone.”

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Sheikh Rashid said “the constitution is clear. Elections will be held within 90 days. This is a test for the Supreme Court to see if it allows the unconstitutional and illegal government of the impersonators to move on (and run the business), or if it applies Article 6 on them.”
Sheikh Rashid said even the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial too had warned of intervention if any malafide intention or conduct was found in the way of holding free, fair and transparent elections, adding that the caretaker government had no value.

Commenting on the current political scenario, the AML Chief said there was puppet show going on as the country appeared stuck in a storm, adding that the ‘gang of 13 (parties)’ had become symbol of destruction.
