ISLAMABAD: A 6.4 magnitude earthquake jolted several cities in the northern parts of the country, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar and Swat, on Friday evening.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre in Islamabad, the earthquake took place at a depth of 80 kilometres and its epicenter was Tajikistan. Panicked people came out of houses and offices and gathered in open spaces. No causalities have been reported so far.
Moreover, tremors were felt in Mardan, North Waziristan, Multan, Sargodha, and Faisalabad. Citizens have been advised to remain careful as the aftershocks of the earthquake were expected.
Pakistan is among the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. The country is located on the Eurasian Tectonic Plate, which is known for high levels of seismic activity.
