Under the campaign launched against begging at the beginning of Ramadan in Dubai, 127 beggars have been arrested so far, as reported by national media on Saturday.
According to a report by Geo News, citing Dubai authorities, incidents of begging increase during the holy month of Ramadan, with beggars attempting to take advantage of people’s generosity during this time.
This year, Dubai Police launched a campaign against begging at the start of Ramadan. In the first two weeks of the campaign, 127 beggars were arrested, and 50,000 dirhams (approximately 3.8 million Pakistani rupees) were seized from them.
Dubai Police stated that most of the beggars were arrested around mosques and their surroundings. It is worth noting that Dubai Police had arrested 384 beggars last year, while the number was 499 in 2023.
The report further states that according to Dubai government statistics, 2,085 beggars have been arrested over the past five years.
In response to such concerns, Pakistan has taken stringent measures to curb begging and other related crimes, both within its borders and abroad. The government has started legal action aimed at controlling the exploitation of vulnerable people for beggary, raising awareness about the issue.
