KARACHI: The sudden recovery of two-and-a-half-year-old Azan Ali from Gharo has taken a perplexing turn, leaving key details surrounding the alleged abduction shrouded in uncertainty and raising significant questions regarding the timeline of events.
While law enforcement agencies originally framed the outcome as an intelligence-led success following a Rs5 million ransom demand, conflicting statements from the child’s family and law enforcement officials have turned the high-profile case into an unfolding mystery.
Senior officials initially indicated that the kidnappers issued a steep ransom demand. However, the child was found abandoned in Gharo—roughly an hour’s drive from Karachi—shortly after the call was placed, with no money exchanged.
This swift release without payout has raised skepticism among Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) personnel, who noted that high-value ransom cases typically fall under the purview of the specialized Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC). The abrupt end to the operation has prompted questions about the kidnappers’ motives and the exact sequence of events leading to the toddler’s release.
“If a Rs 5 million ransom was demanded, standard procedure requires specialized AVCC intervention. The sudden release of the child without money changes the dynamic of the case entirely,” says a Senior Investigation Official.
Family Points to Social Media Pressure
The child’s mother disputed the official narrative, alleging a lack of immediate support from both local security and police during the initial search. According to the family, the kidnappers abandoned the child under intense pressure after photos and videos of young Azan went viral across social media platforms.
Adding to the complexity, the family reported that an unidentified account posted online at approximately 9:00 AM stating a crying child had been found along a road in Gharo. When relatives arrived at the designated site, locals offered varied accounts—some claiming four children left the toddler, while others stated two men stayed briefly before departing.
The child’s uncle further clarified that a local acquaintance recognized Azan from online pictures, enabling family members to travel directly to Gharo to collect him.
Unanswered Questions
The discrepancies between police claims of a coordinated raid and the family’s account of a social-media-driven recovery have raised broader questions regarding the handling of the case. Authorities have yet to confirm the identity or whereabouts of the suspects involved as investigations continue.
