WASHINGTON: The number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide has surged to 3,065,739 on Tuesday.
More than 211,658 people have died around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the highest death toll over 56,000 in the United States.
Over half of all deaths are in Europe, with the toll hitting 126,233 in the continent. In the United States, nearly 1,010,507 cases were confirmed, including more than 56,803 deaths.
Italy, which recorded its first coronavirus death at the end of February, has 26,977 fatalities, with 333 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours. Spain has recorded 23,521 fatalities with 331 in a single day and 229,422 infections.
China has declared 4,633 deaths and 82,836 cases, with 77,555 recoveries. France has reported 437 deaths in a single day, taking the tally to 23,293 deaths and 165,842 cases.
The United Kingdom has reported 360 deaths during the last 24 hours, 21,092 fatalities, and 157,149 infections. Turkey reported 112,261 coronavirus cases and 2,900 fatalities.
Over 87,147 people have infected while 794 people died of the virus in Russia. Meanwhile, the death toll is 5,806 in Iran as the confirmed number of cases is almost 91,472.
India has reported 26,496 cases of COVID-19 and 824 deaths. The authorities have set up teams to focus on compliance with lockdown measures.
