A devastating earthquake in the South American country of Colombia has killed 27 people, prompting the government to declare a national emergency.
According to news agencies, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, causing widespread destruction. Tremors were also felt in neighbouring Ecuador, prompting residents to rush out of their homes and buildings.
According to the mayor of Cali, at least 20 buildings collapsed in the city following the earthquake, while several people are reportedly trapped beneath the rubble.
The mayor said specialised rescue teams have been called in from the capital Bogotá and Medellín to assist in relief and rescue operations.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the earthquake was located in the municipality of San José del Palmar in the Chocó region, approximately 400 kilometres west of the capital, Bogotá.
Relief and rescue operations are continuing in the affected areas, while authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and the possible loss of life.
