KARACHI: The Boat Basin police registered a case on behalf of the state after a group of transgender individuals allegedly stormed the police station, ransacked property, broke Safe City cameras, and damaged police vehicles, officials said the other day.
According to police sources, the incident occurred a few days ago, following which three transgender persons were arrested in connection with the attack.
A police official stated that the incident stemmed from an anti-beggary drive conducted on the instructions of the local assistant commissioner, during which several individuals were detained under the Vagrancy Act.
During their detention, one of the transgender persons suffered a nosebleed. Police officials maintained that the trans group seized upon this minor incident, falsely alleging police violence to incite anger among their peers.
Shortly after, a large mob of enraged transgender individuals forcefully entered the Boat Basin police station, resorting to violence and vandalism.
According to the FIR, the perpetrators hurled stones, smashed the windows of parked police vehicles, and broke the glass doors of the Safe City camera monitoring room inside the station premises.
“Despite repeated attempts by the police staff to calm the situation down, the mob turned aggressive, hurled abuses, and even assaulted citizens who had visited the station to lodge complaints,” the text of the FIR stated.
The police have nominated eight transgender individuals by name in the case, alongside several unidentified accomplices.
Officials confirmed that raids are being conducted to apprehend the remaining suspects named in the complaint. Further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
