SRI LANKA: Sri Lankan cricketer Kusal Mendis was arrested after he involved in a fatal car accident, which killed a 64-year-old cyclist in the Colombo suburb of Panadura.
According to the Sri Lankan Police Spokesperson SSP Jaliya Senaratne, the incident occurred early morning on Sunday when the SUV of Kusal Mendis crashed into a bicycle. The victim was a resident of the Gorakapola area in Panadura.
The police official added that the 25-year-old cricketer will be examined by the doctor and produced before a magistrate later. Police will continue to further investigate the fatal accident.
The 25-year-old cricketer has represented Sri Lanka in 44 Tests and 76 ODIs. Mendis was part of the national squad which had resumed training after the COVID-19 lockdown.
He has scored 2,995 runs at an average of 37 in Tests and 2,167 runs at an average of 30 in the ODIs. Mendis had also played 26 T20Is in which he has scored 484 runs at an average of 18.6.
For now Sri Lanka’s international assignments are on hold that included a series against India, due to COVID-19.
Lankan cricket is going through a big mess, be it individual players, or the government alleging that the 2011 World Cup final was fixed.
Legendary cricketers like Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Aravinda de Silva were questioned by the police on the same issue. However, the investigation was closed after widespread protests in the nation.
