Canada has some good news for international students who complete their master’s degree programs. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced on Saturday that starting from February 15, 2024, international students graduating from master’s degree programs can now get a special work permit called the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for three years.
The IRCC shared this update on X, stating that these changes are part of the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP). This program is designed to help students who finish their studies in Canada by allowing them to work here for a certain period after graduation.
The decision to extend the work permit duration to three years for master’s degree graduates was made because the IRCC believes that these graduates are well-prepared to succeed in the Canadian job market. It’s also seen as a way to help them potentially become permanent residents in Canada.
Here’s the exciting part: If you’re studying in a master’s program that is less than two years long, you are still eligible for this extended three-year work permit. This means you can gain valuable work experience in Canada after completing your studies.
Additionally, foreign students currently studying in a public-private partnership college program can also qualify for the PGWP, as long as they meet the other eligibility criteria. However, if you’re a new student planning to enroll in these programs, you won’t be eligible for the extended work permit.
Graduates from master’s degree programs, whether the program is less than two years or at least two years long, are now eligible for a three-year Post-Graduation Work Permit. This opens up exciting opportunities for international students to gain work experience and explore potential pathways to stay in Canada permanently.
