Author and former actress Twinkle Khanna revealed that she entered the film industry out of necessity rather than passion, to financially support her single mother, Dimple Kapadia.
In an interview for Tweak India platform, Khanna explained that becoming an actress was not a choice for her. “It was out of necessity, I had a single mom and she was providing for everyone,” she shared.
This candid insight into her early career offers a new perspective on her journey from actress to celebrated author.

Her parents, Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna, married in 1973 but separated in 1982. They never divorced, and Kapadia raised their two daughters, Twinkle and Rinke, on her own for many years.

While Dimple Kapadia’s return to acting with Saagar in 1985 proved that married actresses could still be desirable to audiences, Twinkle’s entry was driven by financial need.
She made her debut opposite Bobby Deol in Barsaat (1995) and starred in films like Badshah (1999) and Mela (2000), before leaving acting to marry Akshay Kumar.
Later on her exit from films, Khanna established herself as a successful author, with bestsellers such as Mrs Funnybones.

Khanna has openly acknowledged her career shift and her “spectacular failure” as an actor, a realization that she says opened her up to other opportunities.
Khanna’s recent comments highlight her pragmatic entry into Bollywood and the different motivations that can drive one’s career choices.
