Bluebottle stings trigger fresh alert for Karachi beach visitors

KARACHI: Marine experts have once again urged citizens to exercise caution while visiting the city’s beaches during the monsoon season, warning that bluebottles — venomous marine organisms often mistaken for jellyfish — are commonly washed ashore along the Karachi coast during June and July.

The advisory follows reports circulating on social media, including a recent video in which several beachgoers were reportedly stung by bluebottles while bathing with their families. The incidents prompted experts to remind the public to carefully inspect their surroundings before entering the sea, avoid touching unfamiliar marine creatures and closely supervise children at beaches.

According to marine experts, although bluebottles resemble jellyfish, they are a different type of marine organism. Their tentacles contain venom-filled stinging cells capable of causing intense pain, skin irritation, swelling and redness. Even after the initial contact, detached tentacles can continue releasing venom if touched.

Experts said immediate and appropriate first aid could significantly reduce pain and minimise complications.

They advised that any visible blue tentacles should be removed carefully using tweezers or while wearing gloves, warning against rubbing the affected area or using bare hands, as this could trigger additional venom release.

The affected area should then be rinsed only with seawater to remove any remaining tentacle fragments. Fresh water should be avoided, experts said, as it can activate the remaining stinging cells and worsen the injury.

Medical specialists further recommend immersing the affected area in hot water at around 45 degrees Celsius for approximately 20 minutes, after first ensuring the water is not hot enough to cause burns. The heat helps neutralise the venom and provides effective pain relief.

Authorities have advised beach visitors to remain vigilant during the monsoon season and seek medical attention immediately if a person develops severe pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness or signs of an allergic reaction following a sting.
