James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash continues its dominant run, leading the North American box office for the fifth week in a row.
Over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend, the film earned an additional $17.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $367.4 million and its massive global earnings to over $1.3 billion.
This marks Cameron’s fourth film to exceed the billion-dollar milestone.
While Avatar thrived, other new releases and holdovers saw mixed results.
The Bone Temple opened in second place with a lackluster $15 million. Industry analysts suggest the film suffered from “franchise fatigue,” as it was released only seven months after the previous installment.
Disney’s Zootopia 2 climbed to third place, pulling in $12 million and proving its longevity with audiences.
The psychological thriller The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, took fourth place with $10.2 million.
Meanwhile, the Timothée Chalamet-led 1950s drama Marty Supreme secured the fifth spot, earning $6.7 million.
