ISLAMABAD: The federal government has appointed a senior officer of Inland Revenue Service Asim Ahmed as the new chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
The notification was issued on Friday after the cabinet approved his appointment as the chairman. Through another notification, the federal government also gave additional charge of the revenue division secretary to him.
Asim Ahmed, who is from the Inland Revenue group, is currently serving as Member Information Technology (IT).
Asim Ahmed will be replacing the incumbent head of the tax collecting body, Javed Ghani who is to retire on April 10. This is the sixth time the PTI-led government has appointed the FBR chairman.
Javed Ghani was posted as a regular chairman on Dec 29, 2020 after having the additional charge of the slot for five months. This is a critical hour for tax collection machinery as its performance becomes immensely important due to the country’s scrutiny under the strict supervision of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
It is pertinent to mention here that the federal government in July 2020 removed Nausheen Javed from the post of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairperson and appointed Javed Ghani in her place.
