Senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Asad Umar has said that the interim government is violating the constitution by not announcing the date for elections in Punjab.
Talking to reporters alongside other PTI leaders on Tuesday, Umar said that Pakistan is facing a constitutional crisis as the government and its supporters do not want elections in the country.
PTI leader claimed that the administration is aware that Imran Khan will win with a significant majority if elections are held on schedule.
According to Umar, the government was explicitly told in the Lahore High Court (LHC) judgement to declare election dates, but this hasn’t happened yet.
“It’s been four days since the court order, but nothing has been done,” he lamented.
He said the chief Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) met the Punjab governor four days after the court’s order to discuss the matter.
Following the Lahore High Court’s verdict which directed to hold the provincial assembly of Punjab’s elections within 90 days, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday requested the Punjab governor for a meeting to discuss the matter in order to finalise the election date.
President Arif Alvi had also urged the ECP on February 8 to “immediately announce” the date for polls in KP and Punjab and put an end to “dangerous speculative propaganda” on both the provincial assembly and general elections. However, so far, the governors of the two provinces have refrained from providing any date for the polls on several pretexts.
