Renowned Indian singer Arijit Singh surprised fans on Tuesday by announcing his retirement from playback singing in Bollywood.
In a social media statement, he wished everyone a happy new year and expressed gratitude to his fans for their immense love over the years. He said: “I am happy to announce that I will no longer accept any new work as a playback singer. I am ending it here. It has been a wonderful journey.”
According to Indian media, Arijit later clarified that he is stepping back only from playback singing while continuing classical music and live concerts.
Posts allegedly from his personal Twitter account reveal that the 38-year-old singer shared multiple reasons behind his decision, emphasizing that it was neither sudden nor caused by a single incident. He mentioned that it was a culmination of several factors he had been contemplating for a long time and finally gathered the courage to take this step.
One of the key reasons he cited was creative restlessness. Arijit admitted that he gets bored quickly, which is why he often performs the same song in different styles on stage. He confessed: “The truth is, I am bored.”
Additionally, Indian media reported that Arijit wants to make room for new talent in the industry, allowing emerging artists more opportunities to shine.
