Karachi has reported another rabies case as 75-year-old Nemat Gul from Lyari began showing symptoms of the deadly viral disease.
Deputy In-Charge of ER at Jinnah Hospital, Dr. Irfan Siddiqui, said the patient had been bitten by a dog three months ago.
He is now exhibiting classic rabies symptoms, including fear of water (hydrophobia), restlessness, breathing difficulties, and throat tightness. Dr. Siddiqui added that the patient did not receive the rabies vaccine after the dog bite, leaving him vulnerable to the infection.
This year alone, four confirmed rabies cases have been reported between Jinnah and Indus Hospitals. Two of these cases originated from Karachi, while one was brought from interior Sindh and another from Balochistan.
Rabies, a preventable yet fatal disease if untreated, continues to pose a risk in the city, particularly among elderly residents and children. Health officials urge dog-bite victims to immediately seek post-exposure vaccination to avoid such tragic outcomes.
