It is righty said that art has no boundaries and timeline and its best example is Frida Kahlo, an unknown yet known name to so many.
Directed by Carla Gutierrez, Frida which recently on Amazon Prime Video, is an engaging and intimate American documentary drama film. Kahlo, is a well-known Mexican painter of the 20th century who is one of the most important and famous pop culture figures of the past 100 years.
Who is Frida Kahlo?
She was a Mexican painter best known for her uncompromising and brilliantly colored self-portraits, dealing with such themes as identity, the human body, and death. Although she denied the connection, she is often identified as a Surrealist
She gained more notoriety towards the end of her short life. She died at the age of 47 in 1954.
‘Frida’ documentary
The docu-film gives viewers a raw and candid glimpse into the life of the iconic artist Frida Kahlo and attempts to present the actual story through Frida’s own words from her illustrated diaries.
Carla Gutierrez’s documentary which is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video does an incredible job of telling Kahlo’s remarkable story. Most of the dialogue used is from the artist’s letters, writings, and illustrated diaries, and the documentary is told from her point of view, using her words, and from her perspective.
The director used animation which delightfully complement the voiceover of her innermost thoughts and desires. The result is an exploration of her work and life in a manner that most other documentaries could only dream of.

For her self-portraits! Her self-portraits often include interpretations of physical and psychological wounds. Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits are considered among the finest ever created. Her most famous self-portrait is perhaps Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird.
