KARACHI: Irregularities worth crores of rupees have been uncovered in two major education-sector projects in Murad Memon Goth, prompting Sindh Colleges Secretary Nadeem-ur-Rehman Memon to order immediate action against officials and contractor firms.
According to media reports, the secretary directed the initiation of proceedings against the responsible officers and both contracting companies, issuance of show-cause notices, a comprehensive audit of the project records, blacklisting of the firms and forfeiture of their security deposits.
During a briefing, officials informed the meeting that the former executive engineer had made advance payments in violation of rules.
According to the details now available in public domain, the Government Girls College Murad Memon project had a total estimated cost of Rs95.583 million, of which Rs88.421 million had already been spent, while only 60 per cent of the work had been completed.
Officials said work worth Rs57.505 million had been completed on the project, while work worth Rs39.16 million remained pending.
The meeting was also informed that the Shaheed Ghulam Murtaza Hussain Baloch Library Auditorium project was estimated at Rs111.166 million, of which Rs69.825 million had been spent. In addition, a security advance of Rs39.612 million was paid to the contractor.
Memon said irregularities in public funds and avoidable delays in development schemes would not be tolerated.
