PESHAWAR: A sit-in by Janikhel tribe in Zindi Alikhel area of Bannu protesting against the killing of a tribal elder has entered the third week.
The tribesmen have camped with the body of Malik Naseeb Khan who was shot dead by unknown assailants on May 31. The protest have entered the 14th day as weather has worsened for the tribesmen who have not buried the tribal chief.
The killing sparked protests in the town as the tribesmen and relatives of the slain elder placed the body in front of a police station and demanded the arrest of the killers. They also urged the implementation of a peace agreement signed with the tribal elders in March.
A week ago, the district administration held talks but failed to convince the tribe to end agitation and bury the slain tribal chief. The tribesmen vowed to continue the sit-in until the killers were arrested.
On July 7, the talks between the district administration and the tribesman, which had been ongoing for the past seven day, provide futile as the elders and officials failed to reach a peaceful solution to the issue.
Bannu division commissioner Shaukat Ali Yousafzai has also held several meetings with the Janikhel tribal chiefs to review the implementation of the peace agreement.
Tribal elder Malik Naseeb Khan, 60, was ambushed by armed men in the rural area of Zindi Alikhel near Bannu. The attackers also took away a rifle, a mobile phone and cash from the slain elder with them.
The body was handed over to relatives for burial after fulfilling medico-legal formalities. The Janikhel police registered a case against the killers on the complaint of deceased’s son.
