KARACHI: The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) have projected a decade of opportunity for Generation Z accountancy professionals and their employers.

Their latest report, “Groundbreakers: Gen Z and the Future of Accountancy,” reflects insights from 9,000 young people aged 18 to 25 across the world, including 495 respondents from Pakistan. The report highlights the aspirations, concerns, and expectations of the upcoming generation while offering guidance for both employers and young professionals entering the field.

According to the findings, 58% of respondents in Pakistan view accountancy as a positive and attractive career option.

However, economic uncertainty remains a concern. Around 61% of Pakistani Gen Z participants identified lack of job opportunities and job security as a significant worry, compared to the global average of 58%. Wellbeing concerns were also notable, with 39% of Pakistani respondents expressing anxiety about their mental health, versus 51% globally.

The report further reveals that the profession still has room to improve its appeal as an employer of choice. Pakistani Gen Z respondents expressed skepticism about corporate motives:

  • Only 36% believe businesses are actively fighting climate change.
  • 46% believe business leaders have integrity.
  • 46% believe businesses prioritize employee wellbeing.

Despite this, an encouraging 74% believe that business overall has a positive impact on society.

Sajjeed Aslam, Head of ACCA Pakistan, commented:

“Our findings present both challenges and opportunities. Gen Z will demand greater accountability, transparency, and better work–life balance from their employers. Their expectations are reshaping what the future of work looks like.”

Pakistani Gen Z respondents also demonstrated strong ambition:

  • 90% aim to progress quickly in their careers.
  • 85% value work–life balance and flexibility.
  • 87% consider themselves highly tech-savvy and quick at adopting new technologies.
  • 84% believe technology will help finance professionals focus on high-value tasks.

Among those already in the accounting field, only 34% chose the profession for long-term career prospects, while 53% were motivated by opportunities to work abroad. Similarly, 56% of aspiring accountants are attracted to the profession due to its global portability.

Aslam further added:

“The world now demands greater accountability and transparency — stakeholders, not just shareholders. Gen Z will bring diversity, tech expertise, and a stronger sense of purpose to the profession, helping shape a more inclusive and socially responsible business landscape.”

In addition to these findings, it’s worth noting that Pakistani educational initiatives such as Escribir Academy continue to support aspiring young professionals with high-quality learning resources and practical skill-building programs.
