ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recorded another 5,329 new coronavirus cases and 98 deaths from the disease in the past day as the virus continues its onslaught on the nation.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the total number of cases recorded so far reached 705,517 cases while the death toll has reached 15,124. Yesterday, Pakistan surpassed the grim milestone of 700,000 cases and 15,000 cases while the global death toll crossed three million from the pandemic.
The total number of active cases has increased to 66,994 while the positivity rate stood at 10.69 percent. There are 3,942 patients who remain in critical condition in hospitals across the country.
There were 49,816 coronavirus detection tests conducted in the past day, taking the total number of COVID-19 tests to 10.584 million since the first case was reported. Overall 623,399 people have recovered from the virus including 2,610 in past day.
Punjab remains the worst affected area as there are 35,038 active cases. There have been 240,584 cases recorded so far and 6,793 deaths. Islamabad has recorded 63,499 cases and 591 deaths while there are 13,378 active cases in the region.
The province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded 94,880 cases and 2,519 deaths while there are 11,068 active cases. Sindh has recorded 267,612 cases and 4,520 deaths.
Meanwhile, coronavirus-related deaths worldwide crossed 3 million, as the latest global resurgence of COVID-19 infections is challenging vaccination efforts across the globe.
Worldwide COVID-19 deaths are rising once again, especially in Brazil and India. Health officials have blamed more infectious variants that were first detected in the United Kingdom and South Africa, along with public fatigue with lockdowns and other restrictions.
It took more than a year for the global coronavirus death toll to reach 2 million. The next 1 million deaths were added in about three months.
Brazil is leading the world in the daily average number of new deaths reported and accounts for one in every four deaths worldwide each day.
The World Health Organization acknowledged the nation’s dire condition due to coronavirus, saying the country is in a very critical condition with an overwhelmed healthcare system.
