CENTURION: South Africa has been fined 20 percent of their match fees for their slow over-rate in the first One-day International (ODI) against Pakistan on Sunday.
Andrew Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Proteas were found to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.
Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel states that players should be fined twenty percent of their match fees for each over that their side fails to bowl within the time allocation.
South African skipper Temba Bavuma pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
South Africa survived an astonishing onslaught from Fakhar Zaman to secure a series-levelling 17-run win against Pakistan in Johannesburg. Zaman’s 155-ball 193 was heroic, a one-man show in the truest sense of the word because no other Pakistani managed more than 31 in a chase of 342.
It is the highest score in a chase in ODI cricket history, and the second highest ever in a losing cause. Zaman also surpassed Herchelle Gibbs’ 175 to record the highest individual score at this venue.
