LAHORE: A four-member group selling fake prize bonds and the forged currency was apprehended by police in Punjab’s capital on Tuesday.
According to the city police spokesperson, the arrested criminals include Muzaffar Bukhari, Rafaqat, Ali Shahbaz, and Arun Masih. The police spokesperson said fake currency and prize bonds worth a huge amount were recovered from their possession.
Fake prize bonds worth more than Rs2.1 million and fake currency notes worth thousands of rupees were recovered from the accused, the spokesperson added.
The gang would sell fake prize bonds and forged currency notes in the markets, according to police. Moreover, a case has been registered against them, and they have been handed over to the investigation wing.
Earlier, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had claimed to have apprehended six suspects involved in extorting billions of rupees from people across Pakistan mostly by using digital technology.
According to the FIA sources, the group comprising five foreigners and one Pakistani allegedly swindled people on the internet social connecting platform Facebook pretending to be girls.
The cybercrime wing of FIA said the group would send friends request to Pakistani people with fake profiles flaunting profile pictures of foreign women and fleeced millions of rupees from their victims.
FIA claims out of six in the group, the five foreigners belong to Nigeria and have defrauded countless men on the internet. Cybercrime officials, he said, coordinated closely during the course of their investigations, which led to successful actions across the country.
