Anti-encroachment operation continues along Gujjar Nullah

KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has launched an anti-encroachment operation to clear illegal structures along the bank of the Gujjar Nullah stormwater drain.

The operation is being conducted from Nullah Stop Zero Point, New Karachi to North Karachi.  The municipality is razing all illegal structures falling within 30 feet of the drain.

KMC Senior Director Anti-Encroachment Bashir Ahmed Siddiqui said the operation is being held along Gujjar Nullah rainwater drains as well as encroachments on busy roads in the city.

He said that action is also being taken against encroachments on Lasbela Chowrangi in District East. He said that encroachments on Gujjar Nullah, the largest stormwater drain in the city, were being demolished. Assistant Commissioner, Police, and anti-encroachment staff were also present while necessary heavy machinery is also being used in the operation.

The senior director said the encroachments are being removed as per the directive of the Supreme Court of Pakistan without any break while a road will be constructed around the drains by widening them.

He said that after the construction of the road, KMC will heavy machinery to clean the drains. The flow of traffic was being disrupted due to encroachments on the complaint which are being cleared.

The deputy commissioner had written a letter to the anti-encroachment cell, police, rangers, officials of SSGC and K-Electric. He had also sought heavy machinery and security for the grand operation. The original breadth of Gujjar Nala was 210 feet and it would be restored to its original design.
