ISLAMABAD: The federal government has formed a 10-member monitoring committee to remove obstacles and review progress on various initiatives being taken under the Karachi Transformation Plan.
According to a notification, the committee will be chaired by Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan whereas chairmen of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Water & Power Development Authority WAPDA, secretaries of Finance, Water Resources, Planning Division, Economic Affairs, Railways and others would be members of the committee.
The committee will also ensure timely provision of funds for the projects and it will assist the authorities in implementing the projects, read the notification.
Sources said the decision to form the committee was taken after  Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Zaidi had penned a letter to Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan in a verbal clash with Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah during the Karachi Transformation Plan meeting earlier this month.
On January 22, the Sindh government had constituted a committee to oversee development works in the metropolis projected by Provincial Coordination and Implementation Committee (PCIC).
According to a notification issued from the Sindh CM house, the eight-member committee, to be headed by the city administrator, would see through the decisions made by PCIC and ensure implementation of measures spelled via notifications with immediate effect.
Karachi commissioner, as well as a representative of Karachi Corps headquarters, would also be a part of the committee. The committee is expected to eliminate all impediments in the way of development, besides ensuring coordination among all relevant government bodies.
Other members of the committee belong to K-Electric, National Disaster Management Authority, cantonment boards, Karachi Port Trust, Pakistan Port Trust, and Sui Southern Gas Company.
Earlier, PM Imran had announced an ambitious Rs 1.1 trillion package for the development of Karachi in September last year and established a coordination and implementation committee led by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.
