LAHORE: A massive reshuffle is expected in the bureaucracy and police force in Punjab to improve good governance in the province.
On Friday, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar finally removed Capital City Police Officer (CCPO Lahore Umar Sheikh from his post. The chief minister approved the controversial policeman’s removal from the post and appointed Ghulam Mehmood Dogar in his place.
Sources revealed that Inspector General Punjab (IGP) Inam Ghani and Chief Secretary Punjab Jawad Rafique Malik are expected to be sent packing. Buzdar, who is currently recovering from the coronavirus, has been advised to remove the top bureaucrats from their posts.
Buzdar was forced to remove the controversy-ridden former CCPO Lahore Umar Sheikh. His tenure was mired with controversies ever since he was appointed to the post in September. Buzdar had shown his disappointment after receiving multiple complaints about his conduct.
His appointment was created controversy when also involved in a dispute with former Inspector General of Punjab Police Shoaib Dastagir. Earlier, on September 14 last year, he had to apologise for his statement on the Lahore motorway gang-rape incident in which he had said the female victim shared blame for it.
In another incident, an audio call was released in which he allegedly misbehaved with a woman, seeking help for the release of her husband from illegal detention. He also threatened to imprison a subordinate for refusing to obey his orders. Another policeman had resigned after he was abused by the former CCPO in a meeting.
Sources also revealed that the Punjab government is expected to remove DPOs in 18 districts and deputy commissioners in 14 districts. Several posting and appointments have already been started while major changes are expected in the next few days.
